There is a gender-diversity problem in the physician-scientist work force, but it is not a recruitment problem. It is, rather, a retention problem: Several studies, including one published in September 2008 in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), have found that substantially more women than men drop out before completing their M.D.-Ph.D. degrees.
